Yes, I'd say they made it free because of the interface as well - maybe the bad graphics worked on 2012, but not in a present where nothing matters more than the looks. Hell, with this market I'd even say they made the game at all partly because of how bad and confusing CK2 looked, both of which scared away many players from the game when it was made free. Looking back at the previous grand strategy release, CK3, I wouldn't be the first to say that Paradox is focusing more than ever on graphics. This is a market where companies such as Ubisoft with their Assassin's Creed franchise thrive, making games that look stunning for the sake of publicity, leaving the rest of the game filled with copy-and-paste content and their infamously janky physics. Many of the Society tree's selections will have their own positive and negative effects. The Society tree will build on ideas, including laws, finances, administration, macroeconomics, human rights, and even abstract ideas, like anarchism and socialism. Military will focus on armies and navies, which includes military statistics, line infantry, and doctrines. Production will focus on inventions of the era, such as concrete, nitro glycerine, and more, each with their own advantages and downside. As the game goes on, they'll progress through three different technology trees: Production, Military, and Society. Players will manage their workforce, which is comprised of the various people within their country's population.
