It is, then, quite a departure from its illustrious predecessor, sounding more like a Hyper Light riff on Risk of Rain 2 (it shares the same publisher in Gearbox) than the meticulously crafted solo adventure of yore. So far Heart Machine has only shared a handful of in-game screenshots. In order push deeper into the game, participants can tailor their builds using a “wide arsenal of weapons and items” unlocked through play, and there’s a settlement that can be upgraded between each run. Speaking to IGN, creative director Alx Preston also noted that it will be “a bit more system-heavy, with more RPG mechanics” than Drifter, complete with a bunch of separate playable classes. The announcement trailer (below) seems to indicate that Breaker will combine Drifter’s precision combat with the elegant movement mechanics seen in Heart Machine’s second game, Solar Ash.
However, where Drifter offers a 2D single-player experience (although local co-op was added post-release), Heart Machine is currently looking into creating Breaker in 3D, with live co-op.
